5 Cricketers who have Captained teams in both IPL and PSL

Both IPL and PSL are amongst the best cricket leagues in the world. Considered rivals of each other, Indian Premier League (IPL) vs Pakistan Super League (PSL) debate has become a never-ending topic of discussion. The Indian Premier League (IPL) is currently the biggest T20 league in the world, which has seen some of the top stars play over the years. Because of political tensions between the two countries, the Indian cricketers do not participate in the PSL, whereas the Pakistani cricketers do not have permission to play in the IPL. Here’s a look at those 5 players who captained PSL and IPL.

5. Kumar Sangakkara

IPL Team: Deccan Chargers, Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad (C)
PSL Team: Karachi Kings (C)
T20 Runs: 8,319 runs

Kumar Sangakkara is widely regarded as one of the greatest wicketkeeper batsmen in the history of cricket. He is the first player who has captained teams in both IPL and PSL. In the Indian Premier League, he captained three teams Kings XI Punjab, Deccan Chargers and Sunrisers Hyderabad. He captained 47 matches in the IPL out of which he won 15 and lost 30. Whereas in PSL, he was captain of Karachi Kings in 10 games, winning 5 and losing 5.

4. Eoin Morgan

IPL Team: Kolkata Knight Riders (C)
PSL Team: Karachi Kings (C)
T20i Runs: 10197 runs

England’s World Cup-winning skipper Eoin Morgan has captained teams in both IPL and PSL. He was given the leadership role of Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. He led the side for 24 games and won 11 matches, taking them to the final of the tournament in 2022. In PSL, he captained Karachi Kings for 3 games and won only one game. Under his captaincy, England won the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, the first time they won the tournament.

3. Brendon McCullum

IPL Team: Kolkata Knight Riders and Gujarat Lions (C)
PSL Team: Karachi Kings (C)
T20i Runs: 12,062 runs

McCullum was renowned for his quick scoring. He is considered one of the most successful batsmen. McCullum is currently serving as the head coach of the England Cricket Test team. Brendon McCullum has captained teams in both IPL and PSL. In the Indian Premier League, he captained two teams Kolkata Knight Riders and the Gujarat Lions. He didn’t prove out be a good leader as he won only 3 out of 14 games he captained. In PSL, he was the skipper of Lahore Qalandars as he captained them in 18 games, winning 5 and losing 11.

2. Dwayne Bravo

IPL Team: Mumbai Indians (C)
PSL Team: Lahore Qalandars (C)
T20 Runs: 8,149 runs
T20 Wickets: 692 wickets

Bravo is well known as his aggressive lower-order finisher batsman and he was regarded as one of the best death bowlers in T20 Cricket. In the Indian Premier League, he captained Mumbai Indians for just one game in 2010 and lost that. Whereas in PSL as well he captained Lahore  Qalandars for one game and lost that too.

1. Darren Sammy

IPL Team: Sunrisers Hyderabad (C)
PSL Team: Peshawar Zalmi (C)
T20 Runs: 4,505 runs
T20 Wickets: 204 wickets

Sammy is a two-time T20 World Cup-winning captain. He captained West Indies to the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 victory against Sri Lanka. Sammy again captained West Indies to victory in the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 against England. The former West Indies skipper captained Sunrisers Hyderabad for 4 games in IPL. He won two games as a skipper and lost 2 as well. Whereas in PSL he captained Peshawar Zalmi in 39 games and won the title with them as well. He won 22 games as a skipper and lost 16 in the Pakistan Super League.
