Memphis Depay to Atletico Madrid: Replacement Announced

Depay had been linked with several clubs, including Premier League giants Manchester United, Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham. Depay will leave Barcelona to join Atletico Madrid with an agreement reached on a fee of approximately €3-4million.

Memphis Depay, travelling to Madrid to undergo medical tests as a new Atlético Madrid player. Fans said, “Never got appreciated enough in Barca. So happy for him.” According to reports, he will sign a two-and-a-half-year deal with Atleti.

Alvaro Morata to Memphis Depay: “Top player, welcome, Atletico is a place where you will surely be happy. We look forward to it and we welcome with open arms to anyone who comes to help.”

Xavi said that Memphis might want to leave the club in a press conference earlier on Wednesday: “If Memphis wants to leave, it will be a personal decision from him,” Xavi said. “It’s not an easy situation when you don’t play a lot.” Xavi is looking for Portuguese left winger Goncalo Guedes on a short-term loan to replace Depay.

Depay’s Barcelona move is a complete failure. Barcelona has a ‘plan B’ in case they fail to find a proper replacement for Depay in January. They are planning to promote one of their youth player, Angel Alarcon to the first team.

The Dutch versatile forward has struggled for game time at Barcelona under Xavi Herandez. Depay is a very talented player in his former club Olympique Lyon. His quality going forward is undoubted and he is a very consistent goalscorer. He is one of the Netherlands’ best players in the national team. He has not been able to show that quality and convince Xavi. It is not necessarily a reflection of his talent and is more to do with the fact that he is a victim of a system that does not suit him.

Barcelona has included an option to sign Yannick Carrasco in the summer for a fee of €15-20 million in the deal which will see Memphis Depay move to Atletico Madrid. Depay joined Barcelona as a free agent in the summer of 2021.
