After winning the toss, DC had sent in MI to bat. It was the potential future captain taking on the current captain in the second fixture of IPL 2022. Mumbai Indians packed arguably the strongest all-round squad while DC had some weakness in the overseas bowling department. Rohit Sharma was leading his team for the ninth time in his IPL career and with five titles in his kitty, he was the man to beat in this edition of the IPL.MI leaked runs in the end of the match giving away 66 runs in the last five over, despite having DC under the pump at 72/5 in the 10th over.
Lalit Yadav smashed 48 not out off 38 balls down the order as DC chased down the target of 178 with 10 balls to spare. Axar Patel also chipped in with a 17-ball 38 not out, while opener Prithvi Shaw contributed 38. For MI, Basil Thampi took three wickets for 35 runs.

Rohit Sharma, MI captain: I thought it was a good score. It didn’t look like a pitch where you can get 170+ at the start but we played in the middle and finished well. Just didn’t bowl according to our plans. Never been the talk (of badly wanting to win the first game). We always come prepared whether it’s the first game or last game. We want to win every game. Things didn’t go according to plan but that can happen. Just need to stay close as a group and take the learnings. Disappointed with the loss but not the end.
