Tekken 3 is the third entry in Namco’s legendary 3D fighting game series and is widely regarded as one of the greatest fighting games of all time. Originally developed for arcades using Namco’s System 12 hardware, the game was later successfully adapted for the PlayStation. System 12 was an improved version of the earlier System 11 board, which closely resembled PlayStation architecture. Thanks to this similarity, Namco managed to deliver an impressive and faithful console conversion despite hardware limitations.

Tekken 3 introduced a diverse range of fighting styles, from raw street combat to elegant traditional martial arts. With over 20 playable characters, each fighter uses a unique combat discipline such as Kung Fu or Capoeira, requiring players to learn and master different techniques. Initially, only a limited roster is available, but completing Arcade and Story modes unlocks additional characters and alternate versions. Each fighter’s journey is supported by cinematic intro and ending sequences that expand the game’s narrative.

Like previous Tekken titles, every character features an extensive move set, including punches, kicks, throws, aerial attacks, and counters. To help players learn the mechanics, detailed move lists are accessible at any time through the pause menu.

Game Modes

Tekken 3 offers a wide variety of gameplay modes, including Arcade, Versus, Team Battle, Time Attack, Tekken Force, Practice, and a hidden Tekken Ball mode. Arcade mode focuses on traditional one-on-one battles, while Team Battle allows players to form squads of fighters who battle sequentially.

A major addition to the series is Tekken Force Mode, a side-scrolling beat ’em up inspired by games like Final Fight. This mode includes multiple stages and rewards players with hidden characters after repeated completions. Tekken Ball mode adds a fun twist by turning combat into a beach volleyball-style competition.

Story Overview

Set fifteen years after the events of The King of the Iron Fist Tournament 2, the story centers on Jun Kazama, who lives peacefully in Yakushima with her son Jin Kazama, the child of Kazuya Mishima. Meanwhile, Heihachi Mishima establishes the Tekken Force, a military organization meant to protect the Mishima Zaibatsu.

During an excavation in Mexico, Tekken Force soldiers are annihilated by a mysterious entity known as Ogre, the so-called “God of Fighting.” Fascinated by Ogre’s power, Heihachi becomes obsessed with capturing it. As martial artists around the world begin to disappear, Jun senses Ogre’s approach and warns Jin to seek Heihachi if anything happens to her.

Ogre eventually attacks, leaving Jun missing and presumed dead. Driven by revenge, Jin asks Heihachi to train him. Years later, the King of the Iron Fist Tournament 3 is announced, and Jin enters to confront Ogre—unaware that Heihachi is using the tournament as bait. After defeating Ogre’s true form, Jin is betrayed and shot by Heihachi, only to awaken through the Devil Gene within him. Jin defeats Heihachi and disappears into the night, leaving the Mishima family conflict unresolved.

PlayStation Version Differences

The PlayStation release of Tekken 3 added new characters such as Gon and Dr. Boskonovich, along with enhanced modes like Tekken Force and Tekken Ball. Anna Williams was redesigned as a fully independent character rather than a simple clone of Nina.

Due to PlayStation hardware limitations, the console version featured reduced resolution, lower polygon counts, and 2D panoramic backgrounds instead of full 3D environments. Despite these compromises, the PlayStation version remained highly praised for its smooth gameplay and content depth.
